Deck Building

Use this guide to prepare for a new deck project or figure out what to ask about an existing deck. It can help you explain the work and evaluate a company’s proposed scope.

Is deck building the right fit?

Deck-building help may fit if you’re planning a new deck or considering changes to an existing one. If you need work on a specific part, such as a step, railing, or deck board, ask whether the company handles repair-only projects or focuses on new builds and larger replacements.

What to discuss at the first conversation

Describe whether you’re considering a new deck, a replacement, or changes to an existing one. Be ready to discuss the space, how you plan to use it, and any features you want included. Ask what the company needs to assess the project and what its written proposal will cover.

Questions to ask a deck builder

Use these questions to clarify the company’s fit and responsibilities before agreeing to work.

  • Do you take on projects like mine, including repair-only work if that’s what I need?
  • What materials and features are included in the proposed scope?
  • Who checks which local requirements apply to this project?
  • Who will manage the work, and how will changes to the scope be handled?
  • Can you provide proof of insurance and details of any applicable license?

Compare the written scope, not just the headline

Check that each proposal describes the same project. Look for the planned layout, materials, included features, removal or cleanup responsibilities, exclusions, and how changes will be approved. Ask about any unclear item before comparing proposals.

Get ready to discuss your project

Share these details when you contact a company so you can clarify whether the project fits its work.

  • Write down whether you want a new deck, replacement, or a specific repair.
  • Note how you want to use the space and which features matter to you.
  • Gather photos and approximate measurements if you have them.
  • List questions about materials, scope, and who will handle applicable requirements.
